U.S. Army 1st Lt. Thomas Blye, a UH-60M Black Hawk pilot assigned to the California Army National Guard’s 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 140th Aviation Regiment, March 15, 2023, is fully submerged and flipped upside down during underwater helicopter egress training with instructors from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) in the pool at Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, California. The so-called “dunker” training is required for all personnel who will fly on wildfire missions which require hovering low over lakes and reservoirs to fill buckets of water for aerial firefighting operations.
