U.S. Army Staff Sgt. The term unaccounted-for refers to those who were missing in action or killed in action whose remains were not recovered, and those who died in captivity whose remains were not returned to U.S. control following the cessation of hostilities.
Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors.
