Capt. Bruce Merrill, project manager in the Military Construction Branch, and Richard Carstens, architect in the Design Branch, visited middle school students at Pacific Northern Academy to teach them about insulation and thermal engineering. The team demonstrated how buildings can both retain heat and stay cool using a foam and blanket insulation science experiment. Merrill and Carstens heated the back of the experiment box that housed the insulations with portable heaters. The class was able to determine which insulation was more effective by measuring the temperature on the other side for each type. The lesson was informative for the student’s larger class project involving building and installing bird houses for the schoolhouse.
Through outreach opportunities like these, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District is encouraging the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math!
