YOKOSUKA, Japan (Oct. 21, 2022) - NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka’s four new Chief Petty Officers (CPO) had their chief anchors pinned on during a pinning ceremony onboard Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka. Kyle Carpenter, Peter Charron, Brittany Golliday and William Jordan were recognized as genuine Chief Petty Officers in front of friends, families and fellow service members at a time honored traditional ceremony. It’s a big moment that all four new Chiefs have waited decades for.
“I’ve always wanted to be since I joined the Navy. It took me a little while but I finally made it and I’m glad I got to do it here at NAVSUP FLCY,” said YNC Carpenter who joined the Navy in 2004.
“I feel honored to be able to take this step. It is a new chapter for my family going all the way back to my great grandfather.” said MMC Jordan, the third generation of Navy family.
“Today is my 20th anniversary since I joined the Navy. That’s why I’ was trying to hold back the tears. I’m very overwhelmed but I also excited to take this next step and this new journey.” said YNC Golliday.
“I’m super excited. I know there’s a lot of work to get down but I’m ready,” said EOC Charron.
Over the course of the CPO 360 training period, the CPO selectees were involved in training and guidance that will help them effectively lead and mentor junior Sailors and officers in the years ahead.
“As our creed states, your entire way of life has changed.” said retired Command Master Chief Steve E. Horton, the guest speaker. “You will now become your service’s newest stand bearers and standard enforcers. The standard you demonstrate will be the same standard our Sailors emulate. You are the standard.” Horton added. The ceremony followed a six-week training period, which began in early September, when CPO selection results were released.
In the Navy, promotion to be the rank of CPO requires a Sailor to take on the dual role of technical expert and designated leader. The title of “The Chief” carries with it a tradition of knowledge, teamwork and the ability to take charge that began when the Navy first introduced the rank in 1893.
