Emperor penguins slide away from the Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB 10) as it transits the pack ice in the Southern Ocean, Dec. 27, 2022. The crew observed penguins, seals and petrels while transiting the pack ice en route to Operation Deep Freeze 2023. Operation Deep Freeze is a joint service, inter-agency support operation for the National Science Foundation, which manages the United States Antarctic Program.
