PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (Nov. 21, 2022) - Sailors from Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) conducted fleet liaison observation training with Quatermasters (QM) and Aerographer’s Mates (AG) onboard the USS DANIEL K. INOUYE (DDG 118).
AG2(IW) Dylan Howard and AG2(IW) Beautyful Brown observed how QMs conduct their observations. QM2 Kristen Fauber led the charge for the crew and was highly motivated to help improve her skills along with crewmembers LT Juan Cardona, QMC(AW) Leslie Butler, QM2(SW) Devron Ford, QM2 Levi Mcgowankizziar, QM3 Elijah Deleon, and QMSN Harrison Burgess. Fauber and the other QMs were querying Chief Warrant Officer 3 Justin Coryell on how to use the Computer Training wheel CP-264/U. JTWC’s lead training officer, Dr. Owen Shieh helped explain the paramount reasons for the quality of their observations for the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center modeling, in data sparse areas and JTWC forecasts. Those present were able to gain a greater understanding on how to take sea height observations, swell directions, and a greater familiarization on filling out the synoptic hour observations. The training conducted was quintessential in bridging the gap between QMs and AGs on the Hawaiian waterfront since the start of COVID. This was a long-standing tradition for the JTWC Sailors prior to COVID, and looks to be blossoming anew. (U.S. Navy photo courtesy of Joint Typhoon Warning Center Public Affairs)
