The primary aircraft assigned to Oregon’s 142nd Fighter Group (Air Defense) in October, 1962 was the Northrop F-89J Scorpion fighter-interceptor. In this November, 1962 picture, 123rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron pilot Curtis Madson wearing an orange flight suit common in the Air Defense Command and a flight jacket pre-flights F-89J serial number 53-2556 for a sortie in the chilly autumn weather. This F-89J served in the Oregon ANG from 1960 to 1966. (Larry Rea via Chris Rea and Rick Williams, 142nd Wing History Archive)
