U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Allen Curtis, a combat engineer with 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force UNITAS LXIII, teaches a class about defensive entrenchments aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) in Rio de Janeiro. Reserve Marines from across the United States embarked the Mesa Verde to participate in exercise UNITAS LXIII during their annual training period. UNITAS is the world’s longest-running annual multinational maritime exercise that focuses on enhancing interoperability among multiple nations and joint forces during littoral and amphibious operations in order to build on existing regional partnerships and create new enduring relationships that promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility.
