Master Chief Lugo, a native of Chicago, Illinois, enlisted through the delayed entry program, and started his naval career in 1997 at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. His military education includes basic hospital corpsman (“A” school), Fleet Medical Service School, Aerospace Medicine Technician (AVT), Basic Enlisted Submarine School, Radiation Health Technician School, and Submarine Force Independent Duty Corpsman (SUB-IDC) School.
Lugo’s first duty station as an AVT began with Strike Fighter Squadron EIGHT TWO, F/A-18 Hornet Squadron, where he deployed on two aircraft Carriers: USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2002, HM2 Lugo transferred to Naval Health Clinic Hawaii.
In 2005, he entered the SUB-IDC pipeline in Groton, CT; upon graduation, executed orders on board “The First and Finest,” USS Los Angeles (SSN 688). On SSN 688, HM1 Lugo qualified in submarines, supported two deployments vital to national security, and in 2009, he earned his anchors as a chief petty officer.
After decommissioning SSN 688, he reported to Commander, Submarine Force U.S. Pacific Fleet in late 2010 to serve as the staff corpsman. He earned his Bachelor of Science in health sciences and selected to senior chief petty officer in 2012. In 2013, he continued to serve as a SUB-IDC onboard USS Texas (SSN 775), through the end of an extended dry-docking selected restricted availability, sea-trials, and deployment work-ups.
In 2015, Master Chief Lugo reported as the fleet medical master chief at Commander, U.S. THIRD FLEET out of San Diego, CA, where he helped certify carrier strike and amphibious readiness group deployments and selected to the command master chief program in 2018.
Upon graduating the senior enlisted academy (219-GRAY), and completing the Naval leadership and ethics center course, he earned the privilege to serve on board U.S. Naval Hospital Guam as his first CMC tour overseas.
CMDCM Lugo has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (2), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (7).
