A U.S. Air Force MC-130J Commando II assigned to the 1st Special Operations Squadron at Kadena Air Base, Japan, is parked on an austere runway after students with the USAF Landing Zone Safety Operations Course successfully directed it’s landing at Northwest Field, Guam, June 23, 2022. Across two weeks students learned to measure possible obstructions that may cause problems for landing planes, setup airfield marking panels and establish radio communication with inbound aircraft to advise pilots on landing and takeoff conditions. Upon completion of the course, Airmen were granted certification as Landing Zone Safety Officers. The course was first offered at Scott Air Force Base; before making its way to the pacific theater.
