Sgt. 1st Class Jayrayle Williams, an observer coach/trainer with the 1-345th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 157th Infantry Brigade, First Army Division East, examines the 933rd Military Police Company’s detainee log book during detainee operations training at Camp Ripley, Minnesota, July 17, 2022. “We have [observer coaches/trainers] come out here and provide us with some tuning points and best practices so we can refine how we operate and do the best job that we can,” said 1st Sgt. Shane Watts with the 933rd Military Police Company. Military police must ensure that while detainees are imprisoned and segregated, they are also treated with dignity and respect. “Treating them with dignity and respect is why we’re seen the way we are as a country,” said Watts. “We’re seen as protectors. The Geneva Convention spells it out plainly that you treat them with respect and dignity, no matter the circumstances. It’s the right thing to do, and we treat them how we would hope to be treated in the same [respect].” (U.S. Army photo by Pfc. Riley Anfinson, 364th Theater Public Affairs Support Element)
