Inflatable kayaks rest at Twin Lakes prior to being used in a Kids Don't Float training event in Juneau, Alaska, June 30, 2022.

Personnel from Coast Guard Sector Juneau, Coast Guard Station Juneau, and the 17th Coast Guard District partnered with Southeast Discovery to teach the summer camp class about life jackets, boating safety, and how to use different kinds of paddle craft.

"The purpose of this training is to have the kids practice what to do if they fall in the water, and to make a mental model of how to get back onto these different types of paddle craft," said Mike Folkerts, 17th District recreational boating safety specialist. "Practicing sudden cold water immersion is a life saving skill as it's currently the lead cause of boating fatalities in Alaska." - U.S. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class Lexie Preston
