National Aviation Maintenance Technician Day is a day of recognition, observed on May 24, that recognizes the efforts of aviation maintenance professionals. As highly-skilled professionals, the important work they do directly impacts how aircraft perform during flight.
Sgt. Aaron Decker, a 15T UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter mechanic from Whitewright, Texas, joined the Army in June of 2013. Decker came to USAPT in August of 2019 as a crew chief for the USAPT aviation detachment.
“It was towards the end of my first contract,” explained Decker, “my platoon sergeant walked out and asked if I wanted to apply to be a crew chief for the Golden Knights and at the time, I had never heard of them.”
The positions are nominative, and it’s a non- standard position. USAPT is one of three organizations in the Army with non-rated crew chiefs. (Pilots are the only rated position.)
Sgt. 1st Class Justin Runion, the aviation detachment non-commissioned officer in charge explained that role of the position. “Crew chiefs are mission critical assets that provide communications from the pilot to the jumpmaster during operations. They are responsible for safety of the flight, servicing and maintenance of the aircraft in support of the mission when the team is traveling to different locations.”
“It’s taken me to many places, it’s difficult to pick a favorite. I was able to visit the Golden Gate Bridge (on a show), the Miami Air and Sea show, and tandem operations conducted out in Las Vegas. They were amazing experiences and something I honestly never thought I'd get to do,” said Decker.
Decker is approaching the end of his position’s term with USAPT. “My future is a bit open-ended right now. I’m not sure where I’m going to go next, but I do know that I’m going to re-enlist and continue my career in the Army.”
