U.S. Department of Homeland Security recognizes eight employees at award ceremony in Seattle [Image 5 of 7]
Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, the Honorable John Tien, congratulates members of an Air Station Sitka, AK, MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew after they received the Secretary's Award for Valor during a ceremony held at Base Seattle Thursday, April 28, 2022. The crew received the award for saving a mariner whose fishing vessel was capsizing in a significant winter storm off the Alaskan coast. Battling zero visibility, 60-knot winds, severe turbulence, and Southeast Alaska’s perilous mountain fjords, the crew skillfully navigated to the scene, approaching the limits of aircraft endurance and fuel reserves. The aircrew located the individual through expert use of infrared sensors and delivered the rescue swimmer, who then swam through high seas to rescue the severely hypothermic mariner found clinging to a small piece of shipwreck debris.
