    Expert Soldier Badge cadre instructs an ESB candidate on moving under direct fire during day two of the first-ever U.S. Army Japan ESB competition training week patrol lane at Sagami General Depot, Japan April 12.

    Supporting cadre are with units out of Hawaii, Republic of Korea, and Japan, who are current badge holders which offered expert knowledge on tactical handheld radio operations; defense advanced GPR receiver operations; camouflage and visual signaling techniques; chemical and biological operations; military maps; claymore mines; tactical searches; and maintaining a shotgun.

    The grueling competition is spread out over two weeks including a week of candidate training and a week of testing which are designed to identify the most knowledgeable and competent experts in warrior tasks and drills. Training and testing are designed to be tough, realistic, and mission-focused
