Life at Ice Camp Queenfish during ICEX 2022

U.S. NAVY ICE CAMP QUEENFISH (March 9, 2022) - Culinary Specialist (Submarines) 1st Class Casey Shumway, assigned to the San Diego-based Submarine Squadron 11, grills steaks at Ice Camp Queenfish during the Navy's Ice Exercise (ICEX) 2022. The camp has no running water and the grilled steaks represented a treat - personnel at the camp usually eat freeze dried or powdered meals. Ice Camp Queenfish is built on an ice sheet floating 160 nautical miles off the coast of Alaska in the Arctic Ocean as part of ICEX 2022. The camp consists of sleeping tents for about 60 personnel, a dining tent, command center and approximately 2,500-foot-long runway for aircraft. ICEX 2022 is a three-week exercise that allows the Navy to assess its operational readiness in the Arctic, increase experience in the region, advance understanding of the Arctic environment, and continue to develop relationships with other services, allies and partner organizations.
