U.S. Marine Corps Col. Michael Nakonieczny, commanding officer of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), talks to Marines during the Humanitarian Assistance Survey Team (HAST) exercise on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Dec. 7, 2021. The HAST serves as the tactical level reconnaissance by conducting an initial ground truth assessment of the conditions that exist in an area and providing requirements to the MEU commander prior to the arrival of the humanitarian assistance force. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps' only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premiere crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
