Lt. Gen. Xavier T. Brunson, I Corps commanding general, Maj. Gen. JB Vowell, U.S. Army Japan commanding general, and Col. Jeffrey A. VanAntwerp, 25th Infantry Division deputy commanding general for operations, joined Lt. Gen Shin Nozawa, 陸上自衛隊 Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Middle Army commander, and his deputy commanding generals for an office call at Camp Itami Dec. 5.
The generals discussed exercise Yama Sakura 81 followed by a camp tour and battlefield circulation through HICOM and EXCON, allowing the leaders to share ideas on the future of exercise evolution, new ways to innovate on operations and interoperability, and experimentation between their forces.
Yama Sakura 81 is the largest U.S.-Japan bilateral and joint command post exercise which enables participants to work as dedicated partners in support of the U.S.-Japan security alliance and for continued peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. This year’s exercise commemorates the 40th anniversary of Yama Sakura. (
