There are several types of dams commonly found in the U.S. These dams differ in a few ways – the material they are made of, the way they hold or direct water, and their purpose. Shaped like a segment of a circle, arch dams are relatively thin and are usually constructed in tall, narrow canyons with solid rock walls. Arch dams are supported by the walls of the canyon in which they are built. Notches are cut into the canyon walls on both sides, and then the dam is built so that it fits into these notches. The shape of the arch is curved upstream, into the reservoir, and transfers the force exerted by the water in the reservoir to the canyon walls.
