Three examples of ancient Native American artifacts found at recent archaeological digs on Fort McCoy are displayed Nov. 18 at McCoy’s Community Center during the National Native American Heritage Month observance. Artifact No. 1 is a fragment of a 500-year old clay cooking pot. Artifact No. 2 is a 2,000-year old stone knife from a quarry on Fort McCoy used by Native Americans. Artifact No. 3 is a 1,000-year old stone arrowhead used for deer hunting in ancient times. These artifacts demonstrate the long history of Native American presence, such as the Ho-Chunk, in the Fort McCoy area.
