Sgt. Zuleika Vergara, a human resources specialist with 365th Engineer Battalion, Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania, helps an Afghan evacuee sound out a sentence in an English class at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, Nov. 18, 2021. Soldiers here are stepping into classrooms and teaching English as a way to help Afghan evacuees resettle in the United States through Operation Allies Welcome. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan evacuees essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan. (U.S. Army photo by Pfc. Caitlin Wilkins, 50th Public Affairs Detachment)
