German Air Force Lt. Col. Ingo Scharschmidt, the German Air Force Air Defense Center–US commander, renders honors as part of the Volkstrauertag ceremony at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas, Nov. 14, 2021. In the wake of World War I, the German government commissioned the Volksbund, a humanitarian organization, with the recording, maintaining and caring for the graves of German war casualties abroad. As part of their charge, they started the Volkstrauertag, a German national day of mourning for WWI lost, with the first official ceremony at the Reichstag in Berlin in 1922, and marked throughout Germany annually.
