An Afghan individual reviews a sheet with the English words for common facial expressions on Fort Pickett, Virginia, Oct. 22, 2021. The expression sheet was an activity during an English as a second language class, one of a variety of classes offered while they move through the process of starting a new life in the U.S. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
