U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Tyler Santos, 27th Special Operations Mission Support Group Detachment 1 Mission Sustainment Team 1 pavement and heavy equipment specialist, and Senior Airman Dylan Hymel, 27 SOMSG Det. 1 MST 1 electrical power production journeyman, operate radio equipment in a defensive fighting position during Exercise Vigilant Palisade at Melrose Air Force Range, N.M., Sept. 21, 2021. The exercise tested the Airmen of MST 1 and their capability to operate and defend a forward site using force protection and small unit tactics. The MST concept pairs Airmen from 22 career fields to create small teams able to operate independent of main bases, by training them to use skill sets outside of their normal duties.
