Operation Allies Welcome - Operation Allies Refuge

The batsman awaits return of the ball to the bowler (the pitcher, in baseball), in an informal cricket match played by Afghan residents at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, Sept. 29, 2021. Modern Test Cricket, so called, is the world's second most popular sport, after European football, and has been the national sport of Afghanistan since 2017. While much older, cricket shares a common ancestry with baseball. Cricket became popular in Afghanistan not during the British occupation, ending in 1842, but more than a century later when Afghan refugees to Pakistan brought it home on their return in the 1990s. Unlike baseball, a side is not retired until 10 of 11 players have been 'bowled' and called out; something that can occur in 11 different ways. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. 1st Class John Freese / Task Force McCoy Public Affairs Office)
