The NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center San Diego postal team provided virtual reality (VR) training to Sailors from the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group Sept. 23. The new VR training was developed to create a real-world scenario for Sailors becoming part of the postal team on their ships.
Nicholas Schneider, from the Battlespace Exploitation of Mixed Reality Lab at Naval Information Warfare Command, demonstrated the virtual reality system. The software-based system creates customer scenarios in virtual realty to teach Sailors how to best address customer inquiries, complaints and more.
Some people can develop motion sickness from VR, but Petty Officer Third Class Sean Smith said it was awesome.
“I loved it,” said Smith. “Not having a lot of postal experience, this provided me with what I need to support the mission.”
The interface is relatively easy to use and will become more available for future training opportunities.
