Sgt. 1st Class Robert Norton, the 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command night battle NCOIC, reviews the days progress as he prepares to begin his shift at a site near Dulles International Airport in Herndon, Virginia, Sept. 13, 2021. The unit is supporting Operation Allies Welcome as the on the ground command and control element for the 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade and 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade in support of the 377th Theater Sustainment Command. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
