Greg C. Washington, II, center wearing red shirt, addresses New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and veteran organization members in Lawrenceville, N.J., August 31, 2021. Washington, a United States Military Academy graduate and a former Army infantry captain who served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, is walking 1,800 miles to raise awareness of the increasing numbers of veteran suicides. A 2019 Department of Veterans Affairs report stated that more veterans committed suicide between 2008 and 2017, then died in the Vietnam War. Washington began his 11-state Walk to Honor at Mound Bayou, Miss., and will arrive at West Point Sept. 11, 2021, where he will speak to the freshman class on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Washington was a freshman at West Point on Sept. 11, 2001. September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month. (New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs photo by Mark C. Olsen)
