U.S. Army Reserve 1st Lt. Mark "Waz" Wasmundt helps prepare meals for Afghan refugees in support of humanitarian relief efforts Aug. 30, 2021, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Ramstein is a transit location for evacuees from Afghanistan, providing temporary lodging, food, medical services and treatment while they await transportation to their next destinations. More than 7,000 evacuees landed at Ramstein within the first 48 hours of Operation Allies Refuge, according to information from the U.S. Air Force. Wasmundt, from Springfield, Illinois, is the U.S. Space Command Integrated Planning Elements representative to U.S. European Command and, in his Department of the Army civilian role, serves as the Wideband satellite communication lead to RSSC Europe/Africa. SMDC is the Army service component command to USSPACECOM, providing trained, ready warfighters to support the combatant command’s mission. RSSC Europe/Africa conducts 24/7 global military SATCOM support to all elements of the Department of Defense, U.S. government agencies and U.S. allies and partners.
