U.S. Marine Corps Pfc. Jarrett Ellis, a native of St. Augustine, Fla. and a rifleman with 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, poses for a photograph aboard the USS Arlington (LPD 24), Aug. 25, 2021.
“Growing up in Florida, we had hurricanes hit us often; a lot of my friends and families were affected by one a few years ago,” Ellis said. 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment is serving under Joint Task Force-Haiti. “When we heard about the earthquake, we were actually preparing to go to a training event. It wasn’t long before we got a new packing list, a new mission, and were on the bus headed towards the ship,” Ellis said. The Marines have been on ship, not far from the coast of Haiti, serving as a ready-element if needed by partners on land. “It feels good to know that we are ready to help, we aren’t just letting bad things happen or ignoring people suffering. Growing up I didn’t have the best childhood, so I joined to do whatever I could to help other people out of bad situations.” Aboard the USS Arlington, Ellis was assigned to a working detail that took him out of his normal routine. “I’m working as part of the flight crew onboard the ship. We help secure and unsecure the helicopters on the landing pad when they land and depart,” Ellis said. Currently, the USS Arlington is helping several aircraft in their missions with supplying resources to citizens in Haiti.
