A U.S. Marine with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit inserts an 18 gauge needle into a patient during a Valkyrie blood transfusion practical application aboard USS Germantown in the Solomon Sea, July 31, 2021. Blood transfusions are part of the Valkyrie Program ran by the U.S. Marine Corps which was created to expediently transfer blood to Marines in need. The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit is operating aboard ships of the America Expeditionary Strike Group in the 7th fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
