View of the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Springfield, N.J., July 1, 2021. The original church, which was built in 1745, served as a storehouse during the American War of Independence. During the Battle of Springfield, Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene’s 1,500 Continental Army Soldiers and 500 New Jersey Militia members defeated the 6,000-member British advance in New Jersey, June 23, 1780. During their retreat, British forces burned the original church and the town of Springfield. The current church was built in 1791. This was the last major battle in the north, with the British strategy shifting to the southern states. Subsequently, Springfield became known as the "forgotten victory.” (New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs photo by Mark C. Olsen)
