Karen Ferris, a technical trainer assigned to Officer Training Command Newport (OTCN), Rhode Island, observes an Officer Development School (ODS) class 21070 student float during the third-class swimmer test July 27. The test consists of jumping from a 10-foot tower into the pool to simulate abandoning ship, five minutes of floating in the prone position, coverall inflation, and a 50-yard swim. ODS provides staff corps officers and several restricted line designators with training necessary to prepare them to function in their role as newly commissioned Naval officers.
