Master Sgt. Mark Ling, an HH-60 Pave Hawk crew chief with the 176th Wing Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, inspects a helicopter during a preflight inspection on Joint Base-Elmendorf-Richardson, July 6, 2021. Ling, originally from Loudenville, Ohio, has served in the Air Force for 20 years, starting as a crew chief for fighter jets in active duty and later, the reserves. In 2019 he joined the Alaska Air National Guard, and is now a crew chief for one of the 210th Rescue Squadron’s Pave Hawk helicopters, which he routinely inspects and maintains. The purpose of the preflight inspection is to ensure the aircraft is safe and ready for flight, and there are six areas that are inspected by a team of 3-6 personnel.
