The guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) is under way in the Pacific Ocean, Sept. 12, 2012, after participating in a live fire sinking exercise as part of Valiant Shield 2012. The crews of Fitzgerald and the guided missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63) sank the former amphibious transport dock ship USS Coronado (AGF 11) to gain proficiency in tactics, targeting and firing against a surface target. Valiant Shield is a biennial U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps exercise held in Guam, focusing on real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces at sea, in the air, on land and in cyberspace.
