The retreat signals the end of the National Police Week, which began in 1962 to recognize law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Defenders and Office of Special Investigations special agents killed in the line of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel were honored during the ceremony.
