A U.S. Marine grabs a rope at the edge of the Reconnaissance Training Company pool during the 12th Annual Recon Challenge at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, April 30, 2021. The challenge is a 23-mile endurance course where participants test their physical fitness and perseverance through multiple events, from hiking through austere terrain with approximately 50 pounds of gear, to a grueling 1,000-meter swim to shore. Marines are presented with a number of challenges along the way, including obstacle courses, weapons firing, and swim tactics. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Alison Dostie)
