Royal Navy Lt. Cmdr. Barry “Baz” Pilkington, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 23, flies in an F-35B over the Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour (CVH 550) following the successful first landing of fellow test pilot Marine Corps Maj. Brad “HJOP” Leeman, VX-23, on March 1, 2021. Two F-35B test aircraft from the F-35 Pax River Integrated Test Force are being used by the F-35 test team and Italian Navy personnel for the F-35B Sea Trials aboard the carrier; a key milestone toward Italy’s carrier qualifications with its own F‐35Bs.
