Being a Firefighter entails responding to all sorts of different life-threatening and precarious situations, from fighting fires in suburbia to water rescues on the Neuse River. They answer the call of whomever may be in need, day or night.
Captain Clayton Turner, an engine company captain with Cherry Point Fire Department, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, shares why he chose to serve his community.
“I’ve always been around the fire services from a very young age … very deeply rooted in my family,” said Turner. “My dad, my uncles … my cousin is a deputy chief in the western part of the state. [I’ve] always been around it and enjoyed it — the unknown. [Our top priority is] making sure everyone goes home at the end of the tour; all the guys we leave with, everyone on the rig, we come back with everyone on the rig. Going to every call is different and [I enjoy] being able to help people. When they’re on their last leg, we’re the ones they’re calling. It doesn’t matter what the problem is, everyone calls the fire department because usually we can fix it or mitigate it in some way.”
