U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Ryan Smith, a field artillery officer with 3d Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division, uses an M2A2 Aiming Circle to check targets during a live-fire M240B machine gun range at Artillery Relocation Training Program 20.4 at Combined Arms Training Center, Camp Fuji, Japan, Feb. 9, 2021. This training contributes to the defense of Japan and the U.S.-Japan Alliance as the cornerstone of peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region. The skills developed at ARTP increase the lethality and proficiency of the only permanently forward-deployed artillery unit in the Marine Corps, enabling them to provide precision indirect fires. “My favorite part of the range is letting the Marines practice kinetic things outside of their own MOS,” said Smith, “this also builds morale and is good combat training to have.” Smith is a native of Boiling Springs, South Carolina.
