In anticipation of U.S. involvement in WWII, the War Department purchased 266,950 acres of land between the Salinas River and the Pacific Ocean from newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and other landowners. From this land purchase, Hunter Liggett Military Reservation (HLMR) was established on Jan. 10, 1941, under the command of Camp Roberts. The post is named after decorated WWI hero, Lt. Gen. Hunter Liggett.
Today, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hunter Liggett is the largest Army Reserve installation and a strategic readiness platform supporting year-round training for large-scale multi-component exercises with many training resources to produce combat-ready forces. The garrison is comprised of Fort Hunter Liggett and its sub-installation, Parks Reserve Forces Area located in the east San Francisco Bay area in the heart of Dublin.
