Brig. Gen. Phillip N. Frietze, the commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South, passes a piece of birthday cake to Col. Brian Ecarius, the assistant chief of staff of G-5, during a cake-cutting ceremony celebrating the Marine Corps’ 245th birthday at the Conference Center of the Americas in Miami, Florida, Nov. 10, 2020. Ecarius was the oldest Marine present for the ceremony and upon receiving the piece of cake, he ate a bite and passed the piece of cake to the youngest Marine present, signifying the passing of experience and knowledge. The Marine Corps’ birthday cake-cutting ceremony is an annual renewal of each Marine’s commitment to the Corps and celebrates the history and tradition of the honorable service to the nation.
