USAG Daegu commander Col. Edward J. Ballanco met with the Changnyeong County Mayor, Han Jun-woo on Sep. 28 to sign a Memorandum of Understanding enhancing the relationship between the two parties.

Also present at the signing was Changnyeong County Korean War Veterans Chapter President, Lim Chae-Sik. Lim shared his experiences as a veteran of the Korean War and the Battle for the Pusan Perimeter.

Changnyeong County recently erected a memorial honoring Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Army Master Sgt. Ernest R. Kouma for his heroic actions during the Battle for the Nakdong. Kouma, a Pershing tank commander, engaged more than 500 enemy infantry in a fierce, 9-hour battle Aug. 31-Sep. 1, 1950 after units around him had withdrawn. The memorial is located at the exact site of the battle where the Kieum and Nakdong rivers converge.
