One Mission, Many Faces: Master Sgt. Felix Schmidt, German Army

This project highlights the stories of humans from the Global Coalition supporting the fight against terrorism.

"I am in the German Army’s Tactical Support Element Long Range Radar and I live in Jessen, a small town south of Berlin. I am a radar technician for a deployable long range radar and my job is to set up the system anywhere in the world where it is needed. Once the system is fully mission capable, I maintain the system to its best possible operations so it will provide collected data for analysis and base protection. I do this by checking the conditions of the system routinely and conduct preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of the system."

"I joined the German Army because as a child I saw all the planes and helicopters flying all day and night near the air force base where I lived, which was only 10 miles away. I also knew many people who work at the base, thus I have always had a close connection with the German military. Interestingly, that base is now my home base. In 2010, I had to fulfill my basic military service over a nine months period, but I decided to stay and became a regular soldier because I love my country and want to serve my country. I have now been a soldier for more than nine years."

"The best part of my job is that I can travel all over the world with the radar system and meet other military forces. No mission is like the previous one and so it is a new challenge every time."

"I´m very proud to be part of CJTF-OIR and its mission to defeat Daesh. Additionally, it was my wish to be one of the first German soldiers stationed here in AAAB. This has been the greatest experience of my life and I hope that it will be possible for me to come back here a second time."
