Air Force Gen. Glen D. VanHerck, incoming commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, accepts the NORAD guidon from Canadian Armed Forces Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jonathan H. Vance during a change of command ceremony held at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., Aug. 20, 2020. NORAD is the only bi-national command in the world, responsible for aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America. Aerospace warning includes the detection, validation, and warning of attack against North America whether by aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, through mutual support arrangements with other commands.
