Damage Controlman 2nd Class Jeffrey Garvin, a Sailor assigned to the Amphibious Assault Ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), from Grand Rapids, Mich., poses for an environmental portait in front of the Bonhomme Richard. Garvin was recognized by Rear Adm. Philip E. Sobeck, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Three, during a press conference following four days of firefighting efforts which lead to all fires being extinguished aboard the Bonhomme Richard, July 16. Garvin was the first responder as Duty Fire Marshal when the first report of black smoke was called away. Since then, he has been on site everyday leading fire teams on missions combatting the fire as well as investigations inside of the ship. On the morning of July 12, a fire was called away aboard the ship while it was moored pierside at Naval Base San Diego. Base and shipboard firefighters responded to the fire. USS Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability, which began in 2018.
