U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Iuan Martinez, cannoneer with Ground Combat Element, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, mans the radio of Gun 4’s M777 howitzer during force-on-force training conducted in Mount Bundey Training Area, Northern Territory, Australia, July 21, 2020. Martinez is a native of Bellingham, Wash.

“On my first field op, I didn’t bring a headlamp. All I had was a moonbeam, one of the ones they give you in bootcamp. I put it in my mag pouch. The section got a kick out of, they thought it was hilarious. That’s why they call me ‘Moonbeam’.”

This training involved various components of the GCE, including mortars, artillery, and combined anti-armor teams. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Harrison Rakhshani)
