U.S. and Indian officers socialize during a break at the opening ceremony of the 36th Annual Pacific Armies Management Seminar in Canberra, Australia, July 16. Army leaders from 27 nations across the Pacific region are attending the conference which runs from July 16-20 and is co-hosted by the U.S. Army Pacific and the Australian army. The theme for PAMS 2012 is “Asia Pacific land forces: new challenges, shared solutions," with a focus on sharing experiences in responding to natural disasters, and managing disaster relief and humanitarian assistance. The long-term objective of PAMS is to promote peace and stability in the Asia Pacific through mutual understanding, dialogue, and friendship. It provides senior-level Army officers a multinational forum to exchange views and ideas and offers the future leaders of the region's armies the means to establish and cultivate a set of strong interpersonal relationships. The annual Pacific Armies Management Seminar is the U.S. Army's largest gathering of senior land forces officers in the Asia Pacific. PAMS have been held throughout the Asia Pacific region since 1978.
