March is Women’s History Month. The Department of Defense is also commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. During World War II, military nurses became an indispensable component of battlefield medical care. It was their grit, determination, sacrifice, and commitment to duty and excellence that proved women can do the job — no matter how dangerous or difficult that job may be. That included dozens of nurses who spent several years as prisoners of war in the Philippines. Army Nurses from Bataan and Corregidor, freed after three years imprisonment in Santo Tomas Interment Compound, climb into trucks on Feb. 12, 1945, as they leave Manila, Luzon, headed home. The nurses have new uniforms replacing their worn out clothes.
