SAN DIEGO (Feb. 06, 2020) Hospitalman Olivia Backstrom, assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), counts the amount of white and red blood cells through a microscope in the hospital's core lab Feb. 06. Abnormal counts of red or white blood cells can be an indication of infection or sickness. NMCSD's mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training, and research.
